Stellantis Reveals STLA Medium BEV Platform
There has been a lot of discussion around the upcoming STLA Platforms. Initially debuting the STLA SmartCockpit at the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show, the system was displayed as a part of the Chrysler Airflow concept. Run through the STLA Brain, a new architecture for future battery-electric vehicles. Said to be integrated into four future BEV platforms – Small, Medium, Large, and Frame – the automotive group just introduced the Medium BEV platform. Right under our eyes, another platform has already surfaced.
This isn’t the first instance of an STLA BEV platform being discussed. Before this, it has been said that the new Challenger and Charger models will be built on the new STLA Large architecture. By 2026, Stellantis wants to have released at least eight electric models built on of the four new STLA platforms. The STLA Medium platform is, however, one of the first global BEV-by-design platforms to be introduced to, already boasting a long driving range, a best-in-class range of 435 miles.
“What we see today is the product of just over two years of no-compromise innovation to deliver clean, safe and affordable mobility, supported by our €30 billion investment in electrification and software through 2025…The STLA Medium platform demonstrates the power of the global Stellantis technical community, delivering products that are hyper-focused on our customers and rewriting long-held assumptions of transportation as we drive for carbon net zero by 2038.” – Carlos Tavares, Stellantis CEO
Powered by a 400-volt electric architecture, the STLA Medium platform offers a best-in-class energy efficiency and charging time. When using the most optimal charging system, this platform can charge the battery from 20-percent to 80-percent in 27 minutes, at a rate of 2.4 kWh per minute. In terms of energy efficiency, the energy consumption can be less than 14 kWh per 100 km (about 60 miles) of operation. Split into two different energy packs, the Performance pack offer 435 miles, whereas the standard pack is rated at more than 310 miles on the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP). Able to generate up to 98 kilowatt-hours (kWh), STLA Medium platform also has the best-in-class energy running between the wheels.
Designed for flexibility, the STLA Medium platform isn’t limited to one vehicle class segment. Stellantis expects to be able to place this platform in C- and D-segments. This seems to be the most popular option, with 35 million C- and D-segment vehicles sold in 2022 in North America alone (78.5 million vehicles sold on a global scale for 2022). This means passenger cars, crossovers, and SUVs can start coming with the STLA Medium platform in the coming years. There’s even some off-road capability with a ground clearance of 8.6-inches. That’s great for the future of all-electric Jeep vehicles and other Jeep-related brands, like the all-electric Wagoneer model. It’s all going according to plan, based off of the Dare Forward 2030 business strategy by Stellantis.
Engineered to be future-proof, the STLA platform family will all be able to be flexible to fit any wheelbase, width, overhang, ride height, or suspension design for the future of Stellantis automobiles. This also supports various kinds of propulsion – front-drive, rear-drive, all-wheel drive, and multi-energy. The implementation of the STLA Brain architecture, STLA SmartCockpit (above), and STLA AutoDrive platforms will make Stellantis vehicles a little more futuristic. Able to adapt, the platforms will only require over-the-air (OTA) capability to upgrade software and enhanced hardware, as well as offer new features.
