The Ram Truck lineup is huge and ever-growing. Whether consumers want a light duty pickup truck like the Ram 1500, a heavy duty pickup truck like the Ram 3500, a simple work truck like the Ram 1500 Classic, or a cargo van like the Ram ProMaster, this automaker has it covered. In recent years, Ram has also expanded its powertrain and fuel sources to include battery-electric vehicles like the 1500 REV, interesting concepts like the 1500 Ramcharger, and even Ram hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles. Back in 2022, there was even talk about a midsize pickup truck to bring back the glory days of the Dodge Dakota, back when the automaker was known as Dodge Ram. Called the Ram 1200, and information about this baby brother to the Ram 1500 came and went, but we now know where – Mexico.

A small body-on-frame pickup truck, the Ram 1200 enters the midsize truck category alongside the Jeep® Gladiator. Basically a Jeep Wrangler with a truck bed attached to it, the Gladiator was the saving grace to keep this category alive. What could be better than an off-road vehicle with a truck bed? In recent years, Ram Truck has also designed its 1500 model to be more of a lifestyle truck, able to be customized for any kind of adventure. That includes scenarios that require the truck to go off-road and tackle some less-than-savory road conditions. For years now, Ram Truck and Jeep have been leading the charge in terms of new vehicles, and the Ram 1200 is more or less the newest addition.

Now that the Ram 1200 is live, we can get a better look at the midsize pickup truck. It probably won’t ever come to America, but there is always hope. After all, Mexico is a lot closer than Europe, and we know how often vehicles over there tend to stay there. Word has it, that the merger between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and the PSA Group to create Stellantis is finally paying off. According to local news outlet Autocosmos, the Ram 1200 is actually a spinoff of the Peugeot Landtrek, a smaller truck available overseas. We’re not sure if that means this is a Peugeot pickup truck with a Ram badge or if the 1200 simply took inspiration from the Landtrek. After all, it’s been a long time since Ram made a smaller truck than the 1500.

Here’s what we know about the Ram 1200 so far. The 1200 will follow similar configuration patterns to the 1500, such as Regular and Crew cab body styles available for low-tier trims like the Tradesman, saving four-door Crew cabs for high tier trims like the Laramie. Because this is a smaller truck, a Mega Cab will most likely not show up. Two-wheel drive will be the standard, with 4×4 available on high-tier trims again. The entire lineup will be powered by a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder able to generate 210 horsepower and 226 lb-ft of torque. This gives the Ram 1200 a payload capacity of about 2,650 pounds, and a towing capacity of 6,613 pounds.

Designed to be a commercial and lifestyle vehicle, the Ram 1200 can serve it up with the best of both worlds. Oddly enough, the vehicle is being delivered to Mexico, but is made in China. If the recent joint venture between Stellantis and Leapmotor to bring Chinese battery-electric models (BEVs) to the U.S. is anything to go by, the possibility of the Ram 1200 squeezing in there is possible. There are some rumors about the Dakota also making a comeback as well, but until the Ram Truck CEO or a spokesperson confirms it, we’re just going to focus on the U.S. lineup for now.
