The Meaning Behind the Chrysler C Series

In 2023, Chrysler brought the end of an era. The Chrysler 300 model was discontinued after a long time of being the only other model in the Chrysler lineup. Still holding a torch for the Chrysler Pacifica minivan and its plug-in hybrid counterpart, the automaker became committed to being an automaker with one nameplate in its lineup. The Chrysler Halcyon keeps popping up, and given its size, we wonder if this is an electric replacement for the 300 series. Even so, although the nameplate is gone, we’re still learning about the 300 moniker and the meaning behind the “300C” series.

The legacy behind the Chrysler 300C is the mark of a true automotive icon. After the discontinuation was announced, a final 300 model was released. Powered by a 6.4-liter HEMI® engine under the hood, able to generate 485 horsepower, 475 lb-ft of torque, this wasn’t your average Chrysler 300. A limited edition, only 2000 units were made available, and in 12 hours they all sold out. All we have to remember the 300 now is the Chrysler 300 Amazon storefront. So, what was so special about the “C”?

Leaning towards muscle cars, the Chrysler 300C made high-performance possible once again for family sedans and passenger cars. Interestingly enough, before there was the 300C, there was the 300B in the 1950s. Alphabetically going forward, for the next decade, there was the 300C, 300D, and so on up to 300L (and skipping the 300I). After a small break, the pattern continued in 1999 with the Chrysler 300M up until 2004. In 2025, the 300C was brought back with a 392 6.4-liter HEMI engine. That’s what made the 300C as popular as it is today. It was then that the “C” was the letter used to designate the high-performance Chrysler 300 model.

Will we ever see the Chrysler 300C again? Most likely not. The 300 series is gone, but there might be a new sedan taking its place. In early 2024, Chrysler announced its plans for a new battery-electric vehicle (BEV) concept. After the initial Chrysler Airflow concept that debuted at the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show fizzled out, it was time for something new. A combination of the Chrysler Portal Concept that debuted in 2017, the Chrysler Airflow Concept, the Chrysler SmartCockpit, the Halcyon looks like a small-to-medium size BEV with all the futuristic style and tech from these concepts.

The Halcyon Concept boasts a lot of features that sound unreal. Donning the new LED-lit Chrysler wing logo on the front fascia, the Halcyon will be a two-door model – today, two-door models are reserved for high-performance vehicles. STLA Brain technology will be running the car, and no specs about the power output have been discussed. As for now, Chrysler claims that the Halcyon concept will be fully autonomous thanks to the STLA Brain, STLA Smart Cockpit, and STLA AutoDrive technology discussed in recent years.

Another outrageous claim? The Chrysler Halcyon is expected to have unlimited range. How is that even possible? Sure, hybrid cars use regenerative braking to extend the life of their battery – only plug-in hybrids and BEVs actually come with a charging pot. How is the Halcyon going to keep recharging if it’s only powered by a battery pack? No one knows. The Halcyon might just be a 2025 model, but no official date has been set yet, so we may not know for a while.
