More Details for the Upcoming 2020 Ram HD Trucks
Just two weeks ago, the 2020 Ram Power Wagon was spotted not too far (well, more like 80 miles northwest) from the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Chelsea Proving Grounds testing facility. Among it were several other test mules for Ram HD trucks. The “HD” stands for “heavy-duty”, and HD Ram Trucks can handle some serious work. Now, so close to the end of the year, details about the new Ram 2500 and other HD trucks are starting to leak out. Bare in mind, any information below is subject to change before the official debut of the HD trucks, most likely at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show, similar to the 2019 Ram 1500 debut.
What’s the Lineup?
Ram has been shrinking their lineup a bit for the 2019 model year, and the lineup for the 2020 Ram Heavy-Duty trucks seems to follow. A total of five trims have been named thus far – Tradesman, SLT, Big Horn, Laramie Longhorn, and Limited. There’s also the Power Wagon variant, discussed in our last update on the 2020 Ram HD Trucks.
With these trims in line, many wonder about the available powertrain options. The current selection contains the existing 383hp 5.7-liter V8, 410hp 6.4-liter V8, and the 6.7-liter Cummins-sourced turbo diesel inline-six cylinder engine, able to generate up to 930 lb-ft of torque. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has refrained from saying anymore about the powertrain thus far.
How’s It Look?
For 2020, Ram HD trucks will actually be taking some notes from the new 2019 Ram 1500. The crosshair grille is gone, replaced with new headlights and bracket-shaped LED running lights on the top and bottom that give the front fascia a more curvaceous look. Overall, the body is beefier and has more pronounced “muscle” for that rugged truck look.
Following the 2019 Ram 1500, the interior is also getting an upgrade for Ram heavy-duty pickup trucks. One of the test mules spotted was the Laramie Longhorn trim, outfitted with an 8.4-inch touchscreen powered by the latest version of Uconnect, Uconnect 4. The 2020 Ram HD trucks are expected to have the massive 12-inch touchscreen with SiriusXM 360L as an available option.
The Laramie Longhorn trim also comes with its own nice amenities. A heated steering wheel and heated seats for the cold nights, and ventilated seats for hot summer days. With the many storage options implemented into the 2019 Ram 1500, many speculate storage solutions to pop up for the 2020 Ram 2500 and above.
Will It Still Be Off-Road Capable?
The simple answer is “Yes”. The Ram 2500 Power Wagon is the answer to going off-road in a heavy-duty pickup truck. One of the most off-road capable trucks by Ram, the Power Wagon naturally comes with locking front and rear differentials, a front anti-roll bar disconnect, heavy-duty rear axles, Bilstein shocks, a lifted suspension (up to 14.3 inches), off-road tires, unique Ram “Articulink” front suspension system, and a sway-bar disconnect system.
