Dodge Hornet R/T Lands on 2023 Wards 10 Best Engines and Propulsion Systems List

As the year comes ever closer to the end, there will be plenty of organizations and publications tallying up the scores and releasing “best of” lists or naming certain products for awards. In the auto industry, it’s a great time to add a couple of more honors or accolades to the bed post before year’s end. One publication well-known to only name the best of the best on its prestigious collection of lists, WardsAuto is known for several “best of” lists, such as the 10 Best Interior and UX List. This year, the mighty plug-in hybrid, the Dodge Hornet R/T made the list for the 2023 Wards 10 Best Engines and Propulsion Systems award.
“Driving fun won’t ever go out of style, and the 1.3-liter turbo PHEV that powers the Dodge Hornet R/T, as well as other very successful models around the world, opens a new chapter for performance…Our global electrification strategy is in full execution mode and with it comes new levels of capability and performance, all geared toward powering class-leading products that deliver on our ambition for clean, safe and affordable mobility.” – Micky Bly, Stellantis head of global propulsion systems
WardsAuto is a trusted organization and automotive publication in the industry, with automakers earning a great reputation for a number of categories every year. Covering the latest news, data, and analysis on the newest vehicles available in the market today, consumers can find all they need when shopping for a new car with publications like WardsAuto. For the 10 Best Engines and Propulsion Systems, Wards editors evaluated 32 vehicles: 13 internal-combustion engine vehicles, 10 battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), and nine hybrids. Out of them all, the Dodge Hornet R/T plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) landed on the list, powered by a 1.3-liter Turbocharged 4-Cylinder and a 15.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack powering two electric motors, able to deliver a total of 288 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque.
A plug-in hybrid, the Dodge Hornet R/T can run on either gasoline, electric power, or both. When running on purely electricity, the Hornet R/T can offer an all-electric range (AER) of more than 30 miles. When using gasoline or both forms of power, the Hornet R/T also comes with the new PowerShot performance feature. Consumers can boost their Hornet R/T with the push of a button, delivering 30 horsepower and instant torque for 15 seconds. Followed by a 15-second cooldown, drivers can keep boosting their speed for those long, empty highways. The boost can even reduce the normal 0-60 mph time by 1.5 seconds.
This is the seventh consecutive year that a model under the Stellantis umbrella has won an award from WardsAuto or landed on one of their lists. Part of the Dare Forward 2030 business plan, many more automakers will be releasing an all-electric vehicle, such as the Ram 1500 Revolution or the upcoming Daytona SRT BEV concept. It was difficult for Dodge to commit to all-electric vehicles – even the Hornet was first released as an all-gasoline model before getting a PHEV version. This could be the last gasoline-powered high-performance vehicle consumers will ever get, but it seems the R/T plug-in hybrid is just as fast.
