Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is one auto group that has been making a lot of effort to increase their powertrain options and the power they provide. We’ve already seen plenty of horsepower from Dodge with the 2019 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye, and lots of capability with the new 2020 Jeep Gladiator pickup truck, but it’s the engines themselves getting the glory lately. FCA claimed to have designed a “future-proof” engine in January 2018, a new “Global Medium Engine”, a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder equipped in the 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL and the 2019 Ram 1500 light duty pickup truck. Speaking of which, the Pentastar V6 engine with eTorque available in the Wrangler JL and new Ram 1500 has been named on the WardsAuto “10 Best Engines” list.

The newest Pentastar V6 engine, before accounting for eTorque, has its own technological accomplishments. Wide-range variable valve-timing and two-step variable-valve lift deliver the optimal blend of power and fuel economy, and a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system enables further improved fuel economy and emissions performance, even when towing large loads. The attention is mainly on the 2019 Ram 1500 and its benefits from the new mild-hybrid system, eTorque.

That mild-hybrid system does wonders for any vehicle it’s placed in, especially pickup trucks. How so? Let’s take the 2019 Ram 1500 for example, powered by the Pentastar V6 engine standard. Alone, this engine is capable of generating 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. For 2019, the V6 comes standard with eTorque. Now here’s where it gets interesting – whether a cold start or the first start of the day, once the driver applies pressure to throttle the engine, the eTorque system delivers 90 lb-ft of torque within 400 milliseconds. That brings up the V6 torque way above 300 lb-ft.

The eTorque even replaces the need for a traditional alternator. Running at 48-volts, eTorque has enough power to keep the 12-volt car battery charged as well as run automotive electronics. In addition, being a mild-hybrid system, eTorque offers the 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL and the 2019 Ram 1500 hybrid functions. Such as – auto stop/start, electric power assist, extended fuel shut-off, transmission shift management, intelligent battery charging, and regenerative braking.

The judges at WardsAuto were clearly impressed.

“The Pentastar V6 engine with eTorque shows how electrifying components of conventional engines can create magic under the hood…The all-new 48-volt mild-hybrid eTorque system provides a dollop of electrical propulsion during launch and while shifting gears, creating seamless, buttery smooth power to the wheels and improved fuel economy…Our judges recorded 21 to 22 mpg, outstanding for a full-size, four-wheel-drive pickup…The power of the eTorque system also makes the Ram’s fuel-saving stop-start system work almost imperceptibly. It’s one of the best around.” – Drew Winter, senior content director at WardsAuto.

This isn’t the first time WardsAuto put the 2019 Ram 1500 on a list in 2018. Along with the “10 Best Interiors List”, the 2019 Ram 1500 was named on the WardsAuto “10 Best Interiors” list, and again on the “10 Best User Experience” list. What can we say? This is a truck made to praise. You can find your own 2019 Ram 1500 at Aventura Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram.
