Original 1970 Plum Crazy Dodge Challenger Up for Auction

Muscle car lovers all over know the power of a Dodge vehicle. The Dodge Challenger, Dodge Charger, and even the Dodge Durango have all gotten SRT engines and even an SRT Hellcat variant. These days, Dodge may be trying to squeeze under CO2 emission standards, but eventually, electrified versions of our favorites will show. There has already been plenty of talk about a Dodge Charger Plug-in Hybrid, but nothing certain. Back in the old days when oil and CO2 standards were a little lower, Dodge vehicles were pushing engines and muscle cars as far as they could go. There aren’t many left, but every so often, an auction for the last of the surviving units happens, and this one is going down at the end of July, 2021, for one of the original 1970 Plum Crazy Dodge Challenger units.
There is only one, so the auction should collect a pretty hefty bid when classic sports cars have sold as much for $100,000 in the past few years. A classic and noticeable just about anywhere, the original 1970 Plum Crazy Dodge Challenger stands out due to its High Impact Paint color from its HIP legacy color storage. These are colors that aren’t always made available, although in recent years, many have been made available. Back then, they were more rare, and finding an old Challenger R/T powered by an old engine may sound silly, but before the 392 cubic-inch made the scene, Dodge had a 383 under the hood.
So, this 1970 Plum Crazy Dodge Challenger comes equipped with a 383 Cubic Inch V8 engine, capable of generating 335 horsepower and 425 lb-ft of torque. Paired to an automatic transmission – which is odd since the first time Dodge used an automatic transmission was on the 2007–2012 Dodge Ram Chassis Cab 3500, 4500, and 5500 pickup truck models. The first time to use it on an all Dodge vehicle was the 2012–2016 Dodge Dart, with a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive (FWD). There must have been an upgrade made to this one.
This original 1970 Plum Crazy Dodge Challenger also comes with classic style choices inside and out. The paint color is known as “High Impact paint color C7” as well as Plum Crazy. Like all Dodge Challenger models, this one comes with only two doors. Contrasting with the Plum Crazy body paint color is a Black Vinyl Hardtop. Inside, it’s an all-white interior. Pretty classy setup for this one.
At the time of release, the original 1970 Plum Crazy Dodge Challenger went for only $4,090. That’s a sliver of what most Dodge vehicles cost today. Listed in the Chrysler Registry, the unit going on auction is #61 of 253 of all known 1970 383-4BBL Dodge Challenger R/T 2-door hardtops still on the market or the roads today. A total of 8,939 units were built with the 383 cubic-inch V8 engine.
