New Standard Turbo Engine Added to 2023 Jeep Compass
The Jeep Compass is sometimes referred to as the leading model in the Jeep lineup. Always the first to get new technology, or even the new powertrain system with the Compass 4xe (in Europe), it makes sense that Jeep would also be installing a new standard gasoline engine into the subcompact SUV. We’ve seen a couple of new engines from Stellantis, wishing to keep gasoline-engine vehicles alive until the day they completely die, and this new advanced 2.0-liter turbocharged engine is fairly reminiscent of the “future-proof” engine Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA, now Stellantis) introduced in 2018. Set to replace the Tigershark engine in the Jeep lineup, but the numbers are a bit off. The new standard in the Jeep Compass, it’s a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine to give the SUV a little boost for the 2023 model year.

There have been several new engines introduced in recent years, such as the aforementioned 2.0-liter turbocharged engine of 2018, able to produce a best-in-class 270 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. Able to give the usual V6 a run for its money, compact turbocharged engines are quickly becoming popular. This goes double doe the all-new 3.0-liter TwinTurbocharged engine, the “Hurricane”, released in early 2022. An inline six-cylinder, it was on par with V8 engines, available with a Standard Output (SO) and a High Output (HO) system, able to generate 400 horsepower and 450 lb.-ft. of torque with the SO, and more than 500 horsepower and 475 lb.-ft. of torque for the HO. It was also said to be the new engine for hybrid models, not yet fully giving up on gasoline. So why is this new Jeep Compass engine so special?
For one thing, it’s made for 4×4 configurations, not a definite given for the above engines released. Available for the 2022 Jeep Compass Sport, Latitude, Latitude LUX, Limited, Trailhawk, a turbocharged engine can increase the performance and capability when navigating off-road trails. With the legendary Jeep 4×4 systems also powering the SUV, consumers get plenty of power and control thanks to Jeep Active Drive for seamless four-wheel drive transition and Jeep Active Drive Low, offering a class-leading 20:1 crawl ratio and low range for 4×4 Trail Rated capability. The new engine is currently rated at 200 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque, paired with a new and highly efficient eight-speed automatic transmission for smooth and quick shifting, especially on the highway at those high speeds of 65+ mph. For rock-crawling, this transmission also helps the Trailhawk model, enabled by a 4.71:1 first gear ratio coupled with a 4.398 final drive – a little lingo only true Jeepers will understand – to deliver its 20:1 class-leading crawl ratio.
Then, like we said, the Jeep Compass also tends to lead the lineup when it comes to tech and safety features. A ton of standard and advanced safety features are available on the 2023 Jeep Compass. These include, but are not limited to, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Blind-spot Monitoring, Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning with Active Braking, Parallel and Perpendicular Park Assist, Front and Rear park assist systems, Traffic Sign Recognition, and Highway Assist semi-autonomous driving system. That last one should be nice, and a hint at the autonomous driving systems Jeep is working on for future models. Level 4 is definitely on the way in the coming years.
For 2023, three packages have been added to give consumers more appeal in their subcompact SUV. Starting with the High Altitude package, the Jeep Compass comes with body-color painted front and rear lower fascias with Neutral Grey accents, painted side flares, a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, premium LED lighting all around the body, and 19-inch painted Granite Crystal aluminum wheels. The special-edition Compass (RED) model returns for 2023, adding Redline Red painted mirror caps, body-color roof and lower cladding, and 19-inch aluminum painted wheels to the exterior. Inside, black leather-trimmed bucket seats, the Uconnect 5 on a 10.1-inch digital touchscreen display, and unique (RED) badging can be found. Exterior paint colors for this edition now include Diamond Black and Billet Silver along with Redline Pearl-Coat. Lastly, the Altitude package for the Latitude model adds a more custom look with a blacked out appearance package that includes Gloss Black exterior badges and accents, a black-painted roof, and 18-inch Gloss Black aluminum wheels. Stretching the theme into the interior, black premium cloth/vinyl seats with black stitching, a premium-wrapped steering wheel, and Piano Black accents also take on the darker tone.
