Construction of the New EV Battery Facility NextStar Energy Begins

Automakers all over the globe are shifting towards battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). After 137 years of automobiles that run on gasoline (or petrol), the time has come to switch gears into a new form of fuel. This opens a new can of worms: finding the right way to power a vehicle, where to get the resources for this, and how to manufacture this new energy source while trying to reduce the carbon footprint or environmental impact. A lot of automakers are singing agreements with other companies, but it can take some time to close a deal. The battery joint-venture company, NextStar Energy Inc. announced by Stellantis and LG Energy Solution (LGES) in June 2022, was supposed to begin construction last year. In June 2023, NextStar Energy got the greenlight to build through a deal made by the Canadian government and U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

It took some time, but now all involved parties have agreed to deliver on the terms and conditions of a deal the Canadian government made to “level the playing field” with the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act. This mean Stellantis can now start the construction of NextStar Energy. One of eight battery plants that LGES has secured in North America, this facility is being built in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. It’s a good thing the deal was made when it did. The company already has a target production operations launch date of sometime in 2024.

A little background on NextStar Energy, this is the name of the first large-scale, domestic, electric-vehicle battery manufacturing facility in Canada. Through an agreement between Stellantis and LGES. It’s a strong move for Stellantis, now working with a global leader known for the production of advanced lithium-ion batteries for EVs, mobility & IT applications, and Energy Storage Systems (ESS). With an investment of more than $4.1 billion USD ($5 billion CAD) to establish automotive battery operations, the goals for NextStar are high, aiming for a target goal annual production capacity of 45+ gigawatt hours (GWh) to power the future of BEVs.

Propelled by the Stellantis Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan, there is a lot the automaker wants to get done by the end of the decade. With all of the brands that make up the fourth-largest automotive group in the industry, there is an estimated 75 BEVs planned to introduce to the lineup. With various markets and regions changing with the demographic, not all 75 will be available on a global scale, but 25 are definitely coming to the U.S. As for the aforementioned carbon footprint, the end goal is to reach carbon net zero by 2038, but for now, the group will aim for a 50-percent carbon emissions reduction by 2030. The investments may sound pretty pricey, but Stellantis aims to double its net revenue to €300 billion by 2030, making up for all that sweet cash in the long run.
