Chrysler Pacifica: Safety Redefined for Families
“Better late than never,” or at least that’s what they say. At the end of November 2021, the Chrysler Pacifica minivan finally had its safety inspection with the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS). One of the two main organizations directed at vehicle safety, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is the first line of defense to ensure a vehicle is roadworthy. The IIHS examines “crashworthy” vehicles. Although the term seems to suggest this vehicle is something one would want to crash, it demonstrates how well a car handles being in a crash, and the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica received a TOP SAFETY PICK+ (TSP+).
Chrysler Pacifica: A Top Safety Pick+
This is no small feat. To receive a TSP+, a vehicle must receive a “Good” rating on all six crash test measures the IIHS uses concerning crash avoidance and mitigation. Testing categories include:
- Driver-side small overlap front
- Passenger-side small overlap front
- Moderate overlap front
- Side
- Roof strength
- Head restraint test
The IIHS has a rating system of “Poor,” “Marginal,” “Acceptable,” or “Good,” and also looks into safety features that can help avoid auto incidents – with another rating system – Basic, Advanced, and Superior. Not only did the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica minivan receive a “Good” rating in every crashworthy test, but its standard-equipment AEB system earned a “Superior” rating. Now that’s a safe minivan for growing families.

The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica: A Safe Haven for Families
Auto-emergency braking isn’t new, but it can be better, like all auto tech. The AEB in the Pacifica features a combination of camera technology and radar sensors that offer a wider field of view compared to previous systems. AEB is the main function of the frontal collision systems, automatically pressing on the brakes when frontal collisions are imminent. The specific system identifies whether it’s a static object or a pedestrian, but technology doesn’t replace driver intervention and responsibility. Nothing is going to stop a hunk of metal flying at 60 mph.
Advanced Safety Features: Elevating Family Travel
Over the last five years since its release, the Chrysler Pacifica has represented the industry’s most-awarded minivan with 160 industry honors and accolades. The Pacifica was so popular in its first year that Chrysler took its first jab at electrified vehicles by introducing the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, a plug-in minivan. The automaker hasn’t gone full electric yet. Still, this little ditty can drive about 33 miles on electric power alone before the internal gas combustion engine becomes necessary, a 3.6-liter V-6 engine, naturally. It’s small, but it is just a plug-in hybrid. Electric vehicles (EVs) will soon be the future of power.
