Stellantis has been busy designing all kinds of new powertrains for its upcoming lineup. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) are the future, but that doesn’t mean gasoline-powered vehicles will completely disappear. Stellantis continues to redesign internal combustion engines (ICEs) for old school consumers, and their latest change is designing “standard output” (S.O.) and “high output” (H.O.) variations of their core engine, the 3.0-liter Hurricane. This design has received a lot of attention in the industry and earned a place on the Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems List for the 3.0-liter Hurricane High Output straight-six turbo engine being placed in the 2025 Ram 1500 light duty pickup truck.

“We engineered our Hurricane twin-turbo engines to be powerful, efficient, robust and versatile, delivering performance that enhances the driving experience both on- and off-road, and while towing…The 3.0-liter Hurricane High Output engine, standard in the 2025 Ram 1500 Tungsten, exemplifies our ability to satisfy a range of truck customer needs, offering power, performance, capability and class-leading NHV in one package.” – Micky Bly, Head of Global Propulsion Systems of Stellantis

Hurricane H.O. Engine: Powering the Future of Stellantis Vehicles

Able to generate 540 horsepower and 521 lb.-ft. of torque, the 3.0-liter Hurricane H/O SST engine is quickly becoming a staple for many new Stellantis models. An S.O. and an H.O. have both appeared in the new generation of the Dodge Charger, and we’re waiting to see what other models adopt the new powertrain. This new change of S.O. and H.O. simply improves the choices consumers have, but the Hurricane engine itself has been around for a few years. This wouldn’t be the first time the Hurricane has been recognized by WardsAuto – it’s the second time a 3.0-liter Hurricane twin-turbo engine has been honored by Wards editors, and 2024 marks the eighth consecutive year that a Stellantis propulsion system has landed on the prestigious list as well.

Engineered for Power: Inside the Hurricane H.O. Engine

One of the reasons why the Hurricane is so popular is because of its power output when compared to larger, more powerful engines. For instance, the six-cylinder engine delivers enhanced fuel economy, and more horsepower and torque than the legendary V8 and other boosted six-cylinder engines. A deep-skirt cast-aluminum block with a structural aluminum alloy oil pan, the engine powering the 2025 Ram 1500 is the strongest Ram engine ever.

A lot of innovative technologies and engineering choices were made to the Hurricane to deliver reduced emissions and achieve big-engine power. Designed with cross-bolted steel main bearing caps, a forged steel crankshaft, and forged steel connecting rods, the high power output also comes from two low-inertia, high-flow turbochargers and rapid throttle response. High-pressure direct fuel injection gets the combustion cycle going faster, generating horsepower quicker, and again relating to the throttle response. A Plasma transfer wire arc (spray bore) coats the cylinder for an ultra-thin, low-friction wear surface, leading to improved fuel efficiency. In addition, the Hurricane comes with deck-plate added to the engine block to optimize the shape of the cylinder(s) for better flow. Lastly, an engine-mounted water-to-air charge cooler comes with a dedicated cooling circuit to keep the engine from overheating with all that power.
