Stellantis Enters Joint Venture with Galloo for End-of-life Vehicle Recycling
Automakers all over the world are going electric, releasing electrified models and new all-electric models. At the same time, automakers are also looking for ways to reduce their current carbon footprint. The manufacture of vehicles has a lot of carbon emissions, and the amount of gasoline-powered vehicles on the road is still high. To push the market further into the land of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), large automotive groups like Stellantis are building gigafactories to produce the batteries they need to power such vehicles. Now, reducing one’s carbon footprint by recycling is nothing new, but when it comes to these hunks of machinery, knowing what to do with them are the next big step in curbing the carbon footprint. That’s why Stellantis signed a Memorandum of Understanding with leading metals recycler Galloo to focus on the end-of-life vehicle (ELV) recycling process and what to do with the machinery one it hits it’s lifespan.

Taking the work out of the consumer’s hands is always a nifty trick. Many of us sell an old vehicle, either privately, or to an auto dealership that can repurpose it or brush it up as a certified pre-owned vehicle. What about those vehicles that are just too old and sit on cinderblocks? We’ve all seen them before. Well, owners of those immobile vehicles can get rid of them in an environmentally-friendly way that can also go towards the production of newer vehicles. Via the new Stellantis-Galloo joint venture, selected authorized treatment facilities can contact owners of ELVs and collect them to recover important parts of the vehicle that can be either reused, remanufactured, or just recycled appropriately.
Starting towards the end of this year (2023), consumers will soon be able to do something about their old vehicles and reduce their own carbon footprint. Of course, with Stellantis having its home base overseas in Amsterdam, this project will start with an initial focus in France, Belgium, and Luxembourg. As the project expands, it will then continue across Europe, and most likely, North America after that. Specialized treatment facilities won’t be the only way to get the job done. Stellantis and Galloo also expect to offer its services to other automakers that wish to join in, making it easier for consumers of every kind of vehicle to recycle old vehicles and their parts.
It’s all a part of the Stellantis Circular Economy Business Unit’s 4R strategy – Reman, Repair, Reuse, Recycle. This program was launched to increasing recycling revenues and producing vehicles made up of 40-percent green materials in new models by 2030. Galloo has been around since 1939, and has since then become a a leading player and innovative partner in the circular economy, managing the recovery, maximum transformation, and re-use of metals (and industrial plastics) in various industries. The new joint venture should definitely be beneficial for both entities.
