Should I Get a Ram 1500 Rebel or Power Wagon?
With the 2019 Ram 1500 light duty pickup truck, a lot of things have changed. The body shed 225 pounds, the technology was severely upgraded, and all around the lineup is more capable than before. A large amount of attention has been given to the off-road capabilities of the new 2019 Ram 1500, usually not touted for such adventure. Moreover, the 2019 Ram Rebel 1500 has returned for the new model year, and it’s definitely got something to prove besides looking good. Then there’s the Ram Power Wagon, a beast of a truck that was produced to challenge the Ford F-150 Raptor. Both vehicles can handle going off-road, but there is a large difference between the two.
Should I Get a 2019 Ram 1500 Rebel?
So here’s the thing – at minimum, most 2019 Ram 1500 trims will be capable of going off-road when equipped with the new off-road package. That includes a one-inch suspension lift, with or without the available four-corner air suspension, an electronic-locking rear differential, and 32-inch on/off-road tires on (standard) 18- or (available) 20-inch wheels to provide additional grip. If looking to go beyond this, the 2019 Ram 1500 Rebel rides on 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires driven by an electronic-locking rear differential, comes standard with coil spring suspension, a one-inch factory lift, and designed Bilstein shocks. To up the ante, the Rebel can also come with the same off-road package to add on robust skid plate protection of the transfer case, steering, engine and gas tank; tow hooks; and hill-descent control for added off-road capability.
Powered by a 395hp 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine able to generate 410 lb-ft, the 2019 Ram Rebel can haul up to 11,000 pounds. The maximum towing capacity for the 2019 Ram 1500 is 12,750 pounds when properly equipped, so that isn’t half bad for an off-road vehicle. What really separates the Ram Rebel from the rest of the bunch is its comfort, fuel economy, and technology. After all, the Rebel is just the 2019 Ram 1500 with better features for going off road.
Starting MSRP of $43,995 (plus destination fee).
Should I Get a Ram Power Wagon?
Consumers should know, the Ram Power Wagon is only available on the Ram 2500. That should be a dead giveaway that this truck is made for medium-to-heavy duty jobs. Powered by a 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine capable of generating 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque, the Ram Power Wagon can tow up to 12,000 pounds. This beast of a truck can do more than handle tough jobs though – it will pummel off-road terrain back into even pavement.
Built with heavy-duty rear axles and Bilstein shocks, 14.3-inches of ground clearance, and a unique Ram “Articulink” front suspension system and sway-bar disconnect system for additional flexibility and axle articulation, the Ram Power Wagon has been outfit for off-road glory. It also comes with a mean look, sporting blacked-out headlights and an all-new grille and hood decals exclusive to the trim. This truck is made to offer the best of both worlds.
Starting MSRP of $52,695 (plus destination fee).
The Ram Power Wagon may sound like a “Jack of All Trades”, but the rest of that saying is “Master of None”. The Power Wagon offers complete off-road capability and confidence when tackling heavy duty jobs. However, if not planning to haul a heavy load whenever on the road, consumers will find the 2019 Ram 1500 Rebel enough to handle tough jobs and have a little fun on the side. Like most choices, it comes down to consumer preference – 2019 Ram 1500 Rebel or Ram 2500 Power Wagon?
