Public Service Announcement – Trunk or Treat
It’s that time of year again! Ghouls and goblins run amuck in search of candy from dusk until dawn, and although some of us may have a party to go to, there are still the little ones to look out for. Kiddies finally of age for a little trick-or-treating, and whether they’re going with a parent or an older sibling, the young ones are still easily scared. For parents who feel the need to protect their child from a single night of chills (helicopter, much?), there’s an alternative that’s gaining traction. It’s called “Trunk or Treat”, and it’s a great way to let the little ones celebrate Halloween in a safe environment.
Trunk or Treat
In a nutshell, Trunk or Treat is a lineup of cars with their trunks open, filled with candy and Halloween decorations. Doesn’t sound too exciting for someone a little older, but when it comes to children, they’re easily entertained. Still, the party is what you make of it. So instead of rounding up a few familiar parents with kids in a parking lot, maybe go to a park and reserve a patio area for a kid-friendly haunted Halloween party. Or get everyone in the neighborhood involved for a family-friendly Halloween block party.
Really get into the spirit. Just don’t fill your trunk with candy and leave it at that. There are some people who really go all out for Trunk or Treat and transform their vehicles into monsters or even completely different worlds. Speaking of, it may not be from the Upside Down, but the above image is a great way to do more than a little decoration. It may be simple, but pop culture resonates well, and little touches like the missing posters can fool a child with an imagination that Stranger Things really happened.
So have some fun with it. Trunk or Treat is a nice way to let young children to enjoy Halloween without worrying about pranksters or questionable candy. If hosting a party or event, make it like a birthday party where all the attendees get a little gift basket of treats and spend time with some Halloween-themed games and activities. For the adults standing around, there’s always the possibility of adding an “Adults Only” section for those that could use a cold one after all the child screaming. Or dress up and have a few scares of your own.
Dressing Up the Car
In need of more ideas? What kind of vehicle do you own? SUVs are well-known for their hatchback trunks, as well as minivans. If you own a Chrysler Pacifica or Dodge Durango, then you’re in luck. Open up and it’s like a miniature haunted house in the safety of your front lawn. Plus, with both of these vehicles offering entertainment features like a DVD entertainment center (Durango) and Uconnect Theatre (Pacifica), playing some themed music with sound effects can really add a sense of spookiness. If anything, keeping yourself or older children preoccupied never hurts, and we’re all trying to keep them off of their mobile phones these days. At least this way they’re somewhat socializing.
