September 20th, 2022 by

Jeep has been doing well electrifying its lineup with plug-in hybrid variants of each model. Aside from the Jeep Cherokee, Gladiator, and Wagoneer models, the rest of the lineup has received its 4xe nameplate with a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) model. In fact, the Wagoneer 4xe was recently announced. At one time, the Wagoneer seemed like a rumor that would never happen, but now it’s coming out with a 4xe model. Another model thought to only be a rumor were the Willys Edition of several models. The first was released as the Gladiator Willys Edition in 2020, and at the 2022 Detroit Auto Show, Jeep debuted the new heritage-inspired 2023 Jeep Wrangler Willys 4xe.

“Jeep Wrangler 4xe customers looking for the ultimate combination of capability and electrification, with a vintage twist, can now have it in the 2023 Jeep Wrangler Willys 4xe…The debut of the new heritage-inspired 2023 Wrangler Willys 4xe pairs 49 MPGe, 470 lb.-ft. of torque with unmatched Jeep capability, a 2.72:1 4WD low range ratio, heavy-duty Dana 44 axles and a new entry price point to the 2023 model year Wrangler 4xe lineup, which continues to be the best-selling plug-in hybrid in America.” – Jim Morrison, senior vice president and head of Jeep brand North America

Boasting the same capabilities of the Jeep Wrangler 4xe, the Wrangler Willys 4xe can generate up to 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. A 400-volt, 17 kWh battery makes up the electric part of the powertrain, with 21 miles of all-electric range. The gasoline engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged Inline four cylinder. Also able to handle going off-road, the Wrangler Willys 4xe comes with a 2.72:1 Selec-Trac full-time 4WD system, capable of handling 30 inches of water fording, and a suspension lift that offers 10.1 inches of ground clearance. It all rides on heavy-duty Dana 44 axles and mud-terrain tires.

What makes the Willys 4xe unique are some flashy features, such as LED headlamps and fog lamps, Alpine 9-speaker premium audio, all-weather floor mats, rear limited-slip differential, rock rails, black grille, and the 17-inch black-painted alloy wheels wrapped up in mud-terrain tires. To highlight the electric capabilities, the 4xe’s signature Electric Blue and an ‘Electric 4-Wheel Drive’ decal can be found on the swing gate. The Electric Blue color can also be found on the front and rear Willys tow hooks, the Jeep badge and the Trail Rated badge. Available features include the Sun and Screen Package, adding the class-exclusive Sky One-Touch Power-Top and the Uconnect 4C NAV infotainment system on an 8.4-inch touchscreen display.

Starting at an MSRP of $53,995 (plus destination fee), the heritage-inspired Willys 4xe is high up there for the entry price point. Joining the Wrangler Rubicon 4xe, High Altitude 4xe, and Sahara 4xe, the Willys 4xe continues to expand the electrified lineup. Orders for the 2023 Jeep Wrangler Willys 4xe have begun, and deliveries will make it to dealership showroom floors later this year (2022). Production and assembly of the model take place at Stellantis’ Toledo Assembly Complex in Toledo, Ohio.
