FCA Reveals 2019 Ram HD at NAIAS
Prior to the 2019 North American International Auto Show, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) let some details about the upcoming 2019 Ram HD truck slip. Now that the 2019 NAIAS is up and already blowing reporters away with their automotive debuts, the 2019 Ram HD is one truck FCA has no problems delivering on. Heavy duty trucks are made to handle a lot of work, are expected to be dependable, and capable of towing a whole heck without blowing a gasket. The 2019 Ram Heavy Duty proves that at the 2019 NAIAS.
“Ram Heavy Duty owners constantly demand the highest levels of capability to tackle the biggest jobs and with 35,100 lbs. of towing capacity, pulled by 1,000 lb.-ft. of torque from our Cummins engine, we now hold the most important titles within the segment…We’ve also surrounded owners in luxury and technology that, until now, was unavailable in a heavy-duty pickup. The highest quality interiors, active safety systems and of course our award-winning Uconnect technology contribute to the best Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks we have ever built.” – Reid Bigland, Head of Ram Brand, FCA.
The 2019 Ram Heavy Duty is the most powerful, most capable pickup in the segment with a towing capacity of 35,100 pounds and a payload capacity of 7,680 lbs. Thank the 6.7-liter Cummins High Output Turbo Diesel engine for that, generating up to 1000 lb-ft of torque. Yeah, we can hear the wolf whistles from here, and only with 400 horsepower at that. This truck is made for work, not play. Several upgrades were made to the powertrain, including a new cast-iron cylinder head, new exhaust valves and springs, new rocker arms, lighter and stronger pistons, new low-friction rings that connect to the crankshaft via newly design forged connecting rods and bearings, and an all-new exhaust manifold is the mounting point for an improved variable-geometry turbocharger with laminated heat shields.
Of course, there are two other powertrain options if looking to live a little. There’s a variant available of the Cummins Turbo Diesel that delivers 370 horsepower and 850 lb-ft of torque, and the standard engine is actually the 6.4-liter HEMI V8, delivering class-leading 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. Depending on the engine, a different transmission will be available. If powered by the Cummins 6.7-liter, power is directed with an Aisin AS69RC electronically controlled six-speed automatic, engineered to handle the colossal torque of the Turbo Diesel engine and increased vehicle weight ratings. The 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine is hooked up to an upgraded version of the 68RFE six-speed automatic transmission.
Lots of engineering went into making the new 2019 Ram HD to give it as many capabilities as its light-duty pickup counterpart whilst keeping its own name. Four-wheel-drive versions of the 2019 Ram 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty are available, equipped with a BorgWarner part-time transfer case. The 2019 Ram Heavy Duty includes Frequency Response Damping (FRD) shocks on all four corners that makes driving the HD truck feel like a sports-car no matter the payload, and the exclusive Ram five-link coil design has also been added to the Ram 2500. A class-exclusive Active-Level rear air suspension is available on both the Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 and includes a new Bed-lowering Mode for easy trailer hookups.
The exterior and interior have been upgraded. Departing from the crosshair grille, the 2019 Ram Heavy Duty truck is available in six different grille styles. The new front bumper is cut with larger openings, providing greater airflow to the largest turbo intercooler, along with robust sections combined with “interlocking” design aesthetics that also improve aerodynamics. Three headlamp variations are available: Halogen, full LED/reflector and full LED/projectors with an Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS). Yes, the best lockable bed storage in the segment, the RamBox Cargo Management System is available – new for 2019, the RamBox features a 115-volt outlet with up to 400-watts of power.
Like the 2019 Ram 1500, the 2019 Ram HD has an new assortment of storage compartments, with a reimagined center console for more than 12 different storage combinations. The console includes a wider docking area with optional wireless charging, a three-position sliding cup-holder tray under the center armrest to reveal a deep storage tub designed to hold up to a 15-inch laptop, and the Mega Cab includes two bins behind the rear seats. The 2019 RAM HD is also more comfortable, with active noise cancellation system and acoustic glass that reduces ambient cabin sounds by nearly 10 db, and a new HVAC system that features 30 percent more air flow (at lower noise levels).
Yes, Uconnect 4C with a 12-inch display returns as an option for the 2019 RAM HD, but we know there are some die-hard fans out there waiting for some Power Wagon specs. The new 2019 Ram HD Power Wagon features a unique suspension, factory suspension lift, locking front and rear differentials, disconnecting sway bar, and a 12,000-lb. winch. A new 360 camera has been added to the Power Wagon that includes forward-view camera grid lines to help navigate obstacles, along with an all-new and integrated front-mounted WARN Zeon-12 winch that features a unique fairlead and fairlead retainer with a new synthetic line that cannot kink and cuts the weight by 28 pounds. A Power Wagon content package can also be added onto the Tradesman trim, adding off-road equipment but keeping the Tradesman design elements.
Wow, the 2019 Ram HD really is the most powerful and most capable pickup in the segment. Follow Aventura Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram social media to find out when the 2019 Ram HD is available for purchase.
