SRT Power Chiller Wins Award from Popular Science
Every year Popular Science hands out a couple of awards, and this year, they awarded the 2017 “Best of What’s New” award to the SRT Power Chiller™, which is a key component allowing the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon to generate its incredible 840 horsepower. If reading this now, you may remember we recently had a little explanation on the a/c system of the Dodge SRT Demon and how the Power Chiller plays a part.
Take a quick look at how the supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI® Demon V8 engine works. Ambient air is sucked up into an air filter that is then compressed by a 2.7-liter supercharger, heating it up but also making it denser, leading to more oxygen available before delivering it to the engine. Hot liquid coolant from the engine’s radiator travels through a circuit, along with hot coolant from an intercooler that cools off the condensed air. The hot liquid coolant from the radiator is cooled off by the flow of ambient air, but the coolant from the intercooler is pumped into a component known as the Power Chiller, also responsible for cooling hot, compressed gas refrigerant expelled by the a/c system. After cooling both liquids, they return to their respective systems through the intercooler, and the condensed air from the supercharger travels past/through the intercooler (now filled with cold liquids due to the Power Chiller), cooling it further. Now, colder, more oxygen-rich air, is delivered to the engine.
Quick chemistry lesson, folks. The warmer matter is, the faster it moves because there are less molecules in the way. If warm air has less air molecules, then cold air has more molecules. When it comes to an engine, the more air that can be burned, the more horsepower it will generate. So, if the Power Chiller further cools air entering the engine from the supercharger, then as a result, it is pertinent to generate the 840 horsepower the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is known for.
That’s how the a/c system and the Power Chiller work together to empower the Demon’s engine in a nutshell. Together, they are a testament to the SRT engineering team’s ability to push the limits of high performance vehicles. The intercooler, although important, isn’t anything new for Dodge. The Power Chiller however makes all the difference. That’s why it was respectfully awarded the 2017 “Best of What’s New” award by Popular Science.
Deliveries of 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon vehicles begin this fall. Anyone out there that ordered one, keep your ears to the ground, because the Demon is coming. As for the rest of you, what other vehicles would you like to see the SRT Power Chiller put into next? Let us know on social media.
