The beautiful cluster of islands are located 80 miles west of Key West and can only be accessed by boat or seaplane. In addition to offering excellent snorkeling right off of the beach, there is tons of history as the fort that surrounds the island, Fort Jefferson, was constructed in the 1800s and was actively used during the Civil War. After a two-year break, this year’s Fort Lauderdale Air Show is a much anticipated event. One of the most interesting planes to zip by audiences is the F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter, which will fly with a World War II P-51 Mustang fighter. The display of the unique F-35 will bethe first time it has been shown at a civilian air show. Pilots and teams showing off their skills come from three nations: the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, the Canadian Air Force Thunderbirds and the Breitling Jet Team from France.
18th Redland International Orchid Show
May 13-15 at the Fruit and Spice Park in Homestead
Taking place on the weekend following Mother’s Day is the 18th Redland International Orchid Show that is sure to make any gardener or flower enthusiast happy. Dedicated to orchids, an air plant that thrives in our local environment, this South Florida festival held at the Fruit and Spice Park is one of the nation’s biggest orchid festivals. In addition to more than 50 booths and vendors with orchids, there will also be educational lectures, experts and international food.
10th Annual Mother’s Day Dolphin Tournament
May 6-7, Middle Keys in the Florida Keys
Is your mom an angler? Maybe the 10th Annual Mother’s Day Dolphin Tournament scheduled for May 6-7 in the Florida Keys would be a fun way to get outdoors and participate in an activity she loves. This Mother’s Day fishing tournament has anglers of all types competing for the heaviest mahi mahi, also known as dolphin or dorado. There are three different competition classes consisting of pro, weekend warrior and Junior Divisions. Not only is this a great way to spend some time with mom, it also gives back to the local community because tournament proceeds benefit Habitat for Humanity.
