Jeep Renegade and Its Off-Roading Features

August 26th, 2016 by

Jeep Renegade off-roading featuresFor years the Jeep auto brand has brought a combination of off-road freedom and on-road driving dynamics to consumers. In 2015, they revamped their 4×4 systems and earned “best-in-class” for the 2016 Jeep Renegade. The Jeep Active Drive and Jeep Selec-Terrain are the most talked about innovations across drivers and professionals alike.

Under the Hood and then Some

Four of the six Renegade models are equipped with a 1.4-liter Turbo 4-cylinder engine with MultiAir technology, a system integrated to increase performance while reducing emissions. This engine is paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission and this engine and transmission configuration have a fuel economy of 24 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.

Buyers looking for more power can upgrade any Renegade model to the same engine and transmission configuration of the Renegade Trailhawk or Limited. The Renegade Trailhawk and Limited are powered by a 180-horsepower 2.4L Tigershark I4 engine paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission.

A combination of approximately 70 percent high-strength steel, magnesium, and aluminum give the Jeep Renegade a tough exterior build and body structure. Tuned with a responsive steering system and KONI frequency selective damping in the front and rear offer premium performance.

The trim that is specifically built for off-roading, the Renegade Trailhawk, features extra standard exterior equipment like skid plates, which  help to protect the underside of the vehicle from damage, along with red tow hooks on the front and rear bumpers. In addition to its unique 4×4 Active Drive Low system, 2,000 pound towing capacity and exterior equipment have earned the Renegade Trailhawk its “Trail Rated” badge, a symbol of its ability to perform under various off-road conditions.

4×4 Systems and Selec-Terrain

Now the most advanced and intelligent off-roading systems, the 4×4 Jeep Active Drive and Jeep Active Drive Low off-roading systems have been awarded “best-in-class.” Both systems feature a rear axle disconnect system to switch between two and four-wheel drive, as well as a power take-off unit (PTU) to provide the renegade with optimal fuel economy. Moreover, the 4×4 systems have a degree of intelligence that control when the system engages in the presence of terrain that requires 4×4 traction.

Jeep Active Drive is a 4×4 system available on the Renegade Sport, Latitude, and Limited models.

Jeep Active Drive Low is exclusive to the Trailhawk, and it is a full-time 4×4 system with a Trail Rated 20:1 crawl ratio. It allows the Trailhawk to drive on rocky and tough terrain via a brake-lock differential, a system that locks free-spinning/airborne wheels and transfers all of engine’s torque into the wheels that do have traction. Ultimately, it leads to a safer off-road driving experience. In addition, the Renegade Trailhawk has hill descent control, a system that keeps the vehicle’s speed low when descending hills or in the presence of tough terrain.

Every Renegade is equipped with the class-exclusive Selec-Terrain, a dial in the dashboard console that drivers can use to tune traction settings according to the conditions of the road. For optimum traction and fuel efficiency, the Aventura Jeep Renegade Trailhawk Off Road settings are tailored to snow, sand, and mud, along with an auto setting for uncertain conditions. The Renegade Trailhawk gets an extra setting, “rock,” for serious off-road maneuvering.

With all this talk about uncertain and rough driving conditions, it’s smart to point out that the Jeep Renegade has strong safety ratings. It received four out of five stars  in the overall crash rating from the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA).
