Jeep Cherokee Gets New Tech with Amazon Alexa
Today, interconnectivity between ourselves and technology is on the ever-increasing rise. First it was just smartphones, then gadgets like Amazon’s Alexa and the Google Home. Now, we’re going to be getting virtual assistants and artificial intelligence inside our cars. Maybe not for a few years, but the technology is certainly heading there, especially with nifty things like the Google Allo and Google Assistant making headway into the automotive market. The newest development? Jeep® now has its own official Amazon Alexa skillset.
What is an Alexa Skill?
For those that don’t own this nifty device, the Amazon Alexa is the closest we have to a virtual assistant to play music, read books, and conduct simple internet searches. The Alexa device is connected to an ever-growing data cloud and thus, can enable what is known as “skills.” These skills are basically programs that Alexa has the ability to enable and utilize at any time.
For instance, if an Amazon Alexa owner were to say “Alexa, enable the bartender app,” then all they have to do next is say, “Alexa, ask the bartender how to make a Tom Collins?” Alexa will then respond with the ingredients and portions needed to make a Tom Collins, or whatever drink is asked. The newest addition to the data cloud would be an app designed specifically for the Jeep Cherokee.
Jeep and Alexa
Now that we know how Alexa skills work, let’s talk about the involvement of Jeep. The 2018 Jeep Cherokee Latitude will come with the option of adding an all-new “Tech Connect” package. This package will come with a Uconnect skill for the Amazon Alexa Echo, Echo Dot, and Echo Show that will enhance the interconnectivity of the owner and their Jeep Cherokee Latitude. This means the owner can talk to Alexa at home and control their Jeep Cherokee from afar.
The commands currently known are the ability to ask Alexa to – remotely start and stop the engine, lock and unlock doors, send commands directly to NAV-equipped models, and monitor vehicle vitals. A lot of this can be done with smartphone apps several auto brands have, so it’s nothing revolutionary. The key difference is, instead of unlocking a phone, loading the app, and then following through with a command, all one has to do when they are in their home is say, “Alexa, do [insert command here],” and it’s done.
“The introduction of Amazon Alexa to the Jeep Cherokee allows us to meet consumers’ increasing desire for innovation of information … Jeep Cherokee’s new Tech Connect Package allows customers to minimize the everyday stresses of busy lifestyles by providing them with a variety of ways to stay conveniently connected to their vehicles, while making every drive exceptionally informative, entertaining and unique.” – Mike Manley, Head of Jeep Brand – FCA Global.
Nonetheless, this is pretty neat. Plus, there’s a bit more of an incentive. With the purchase of a 2018 Jeep Cherokee Latitude equipped with the new Tech Connect Package, consumers will receive an Amazon Echo Dot (the smaller, compact Alexa Echo model). The package also includes a three-month subscription to the Amazon Music Unlimited Family Plan for on-demand music streaming and a three-month membership to Audible.
