On a budget? No problem, there are tons of great activities that take place in South Florida every month, including May. Whether looking to learn, explore or just do something new, there are several free events taking place in South Florida this May.
Fleet Week Port Everglades
May 2-9 at Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale
This is a super cool opportunity to see what some of our military’s most advanced and high-tech Navy and Coast Guard ships look like on the inside and outside. Ships include a nuclear submarine, an amphibious assault ship, destroyers and a Coast Guard Cutter. While taking a tour is free, people are required to register to quality for one of the open 12,000 spots.
Tacocraft Street Party
May 5 at Tacocraft in Fort Lauderdale
Favorite South Florida band, Xperimento, will be performing at Tacocraft’s free street party for Cinco de Mayo. While it costs money to eat and drink, the music and dancing are free.
Dragons and Drums
May 7 at ArtsPark in Young Circle in Hollywood
Held during the Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, this awesome show incorporates the food, cultures and customs of a range of Asian and Asian Pacific regions and countries like Japan, Hawaii, Tahiti, Indonesia and China. The two-hour event includes delicious food and performances by fire dancers, Japanese Taiko drummers, Hula dancers, Chinese lions and dragons, and much more.
Battle in the Bay Dragon Boat Festival
May 14 in Marathon in the Florida Keys
Hosted on Marathon’s Sombrero Beach the exciting dragon boat races are free to watch. Teams of up to 20 paddlers in 40-foot-long dragon boats will launch from the beach shores and race to take first place. In addition to the racing, there will be food, beverages, merchandise and a variety of entertainment available shoreside.
Movie Night at SoundScape Cinema Series
Every Wed. at 8 p.m. outside at the New World Center’s ExoStage on Miami Beach
The SoundScape Cinema Series screens free films on the 7,000-square-foot outdoor projection wall at the New World Center’s ExoStage that is located corner of 17th St. and Washington Ave. on Miami Beach. This month’s movie schedule is Ant Man on May 4, Little Fockers on May 11, Forrest Gump on May 18 and Independence Day on May 25.
