Dodge Releases New Ad Celebrating 15tth Anniversary of Talladega Nights

Is it just me, or is Dodge hitting a mid-life crisis? Ever since the automaker announced that it was finally going to get serious about going electric and introducing all-electric powertrains with the upcoming eMuscle lineup in 2024, we’re seeing hints of the automaker trying to capture what’s left of its youth. First that odd choice of using Billie Eilish for a new ad-spot, Power Uncaged, and now another ad-spot, this time celebrating the 15th anniversary of “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby”, starring the horrible father character. The focus gets a little lost, more focused on the heinous acts of Reese Bobby with sidebar mentions of the power of Dodge vehicles.
“Given the incredible response to the ‘Family Motto’ campaign from the Dodge brand last year, we wanted to follow it up with the all-new ‘Life Lessons’ campaign,” said Olivier Francois, Global Chief Marketing Officer, Stellantis. “As with our first spot, we wanted ‘Life Lessons’ to stay authentic to both the Dodge brand and to the original film. We were able to accomplish this endeavor with Sony Pictures as it marks the 15th anniversary of the original film, in addition to an amazing roster of creative allies, including Sony Music and AC/DC, Applebee’s, Wonder Bread, Old Spice and Mountain Dew.”
Let’s take a look at the “Family Motto” ad-spot of yesteryear.
The new ad spot takes place in Talladega in 1982, ignoring the fact that there was no Dodge Durango in 1982, with Gary Cole as Reese Bobby behind the wheel. Little Ricky Bobby and best friend Cal Naughton Jr. are in the back, and Reese takes the boys on a little adventure in a Dodge Durango R/T Blacktop Tow N Go stylized with a Granite paint job and Dual Carbon Stripes. At one point, mystery drivers appear in the 2021 Dodge Charger R/T Scat Pack Widebody in Sinamon Stick and the 2021 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody in White Knuckle with a Satin Black hood to create a smoke screen as Reese Bobby makes his getaway after blowing up a fireworks stand and stealing a boat. Yes, you read that right – arson and grand theft in a Dodge commercial.
Take a look at the new “Life Lessons” ad.
Yeah, the first one had a great response, but it also showed off the performance and capability of Dodge muscle cars. This new ad, well, Reese Bobby says it himself – “Just because you grow up, doesn’t mean you need to give up.” That sounds like someone who is facing the facts, but they’re going to be kicking and screaming the whole way. Dodge had a little reveal on its plans for eMuscle, but the automaker is throwing as much attitude as it can at us before that happens, and it’s just not working.
Tim Kuniskis, Dodge Brand Chief Executive Officer, Stellantis backs it up, claiming that the automaker is always striving to give enthusiasts what they ask for – high-performance muscle cars able to boast 700-plus-horsepower with the likes of the new Challenger SRT Super Stock, Durango SRT Hellcat, and Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye. Yes, that’s all true – I just don’t think a commercial involving serious crimes is the best way to get the point across.
