Dodge, Ram, and Alfa Romeo Score Highest on J.D. Power 2023 IQS

Where did 2023 go? The year is halfway done, and there’s still so much time to go. Plenty of time to still buy a new car and enjoy the summer, but which one should a new car buying consumer buy? Which cars will last and keep consumers happy in the long run? There’s a lot of research to do and plenty of data to comb through, but that’s why there’s organizations like J.D. Power that do the heavy lifting for us. Having recently concluded its 2023 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS), the rankings make it very clear who is at the top of quality this year – Dodge, Ram, and Alfa Romeo – all Stellantis automotive brands.
Here’s how the J.D. Power IQS works. Like many of their studies conducted throughout the year, surveys are sent out to consumers, owners and lessees of a new model-year vehicle, typically within 90 days of the owner or lessee buying or leasing that vehicle. This is because of a few reasons: (1) the first 90 days of a vehicle’s performance can tell consumers a lot about how the vehicle will fair going forward, and (2) with the day-to-day happenings of the average consumer, features that may be working fine (or not) may not be as fresh a memory to report on. We want to get real, reliable data, and that’s why we look at survey responses for cars with only 90 days off the lot.
Every year, the IQS ranks vehicles on a number of categories. This year, those categories were infotainment systems; features, controls and displays; exterior styling; driving assistance; interior cabin comfort; the powertrain; seats; driving experience; and climate control. Going on for 37 years, the 2023 IQS based this year’s ranking on 93,380 survey responses. Conducted between February and May 2023, the data is fairly recent. Each rank is illustrated via a PP100, or the number of problems per 100 vehicles that an automobile may face. According to J.D. Power, the number of persistent problems carrying over from years past have only introduced new problems as automakers try to offer consumers offer new and exciting technology to consumers, but still fail to satisfy owners. Not so much the same story for Stellantis.
“We are clearly finding our rhythm…While that bodes well for our team, more importantly, it’s a signal to our customers that we are aligned with their concerns and responding in real time.” – Mark Stewart, COO for Stellantis in North America
At the top of the food chain, Dodge ranked highest amongst other brands with a rating of PP140, followed by Ram with a ranking of PP141, and Alfa Romeo scoring a PP143 ranking. The highest-ranking brand overall in initial quality says a lot about Dodge vehicles. We knew they were all about high performance and capability, but this study also says they keep delivering that same performance across multiple categories, with Ram towing in second place for mass market brands, specifically. That means Alfa Romeo is at the top for premium brands. All of this data comes from J.D. Power, an industry-trusted global leader in consumer insights, advisory services, and data and analytics. In the business of delivering intelligence on customer interactions with brands and products for more than 50 years, J.D. Power knows its stuff.
