2020 is almost over, just a few more weeks. We can do this, people! Before the year is over though, automotive publications, businesses, and organizations are scrambling to get their final results in for the automotive industry. Among the many award shows that went digital this year and all the “Best of” lists, there is one business we haven’t heard much from this year. It’s the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the number one organization for testing automobile safety. Known for rating the best vehicles on the market with a rating system that culminates in a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick Plus, the Ram 1500 earned a Top Safety Pick for 2021 – with the usual conditions.

When we say “conditions” we mean the IIHS typically gives a vehicle a pass or a high safety rating based on the configuration and features of the vehicle. The IIHS runs numerous crash tests to measure the safety of a vehicle in terms of crash avoidance and mitigation (lessening the damage). A total of five, they include: small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints. Keeping this in mind, the 2021 Ram 1500 earned a Top Safety Pick (TPS) rating when configured with the Crew Cab and comes equipped with available Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking technology and adaptive LED projector headlamps with high-beam assist.

Pedestrian technology is becoming more and more of a necessity in today’s world. So many drivers don’t pay attention, thinking the world and the roads revolve around them, and many accidents happen because of this. The worst is when a pedestrian, someone on a bike or simply using the crosswalk, is in the path of these ignorant drivers. Initially, the tech was just used for mitigating frontal crash incidents with another static object. Now, using the same sensor-fusion technology with cameras and radar sensors, the range of the system’s radar has expanded to also recognize pedestrians. If either is in the path of the vehicle, the system will make use of Automatic Emergency Braking to reduce or eliminate impact.

The IIHS also tests and rates this technology separate from the five tests that measure a vehicle’s build more so than its features. During testing, the Automatic Emergency Braking system earned the highest possible rating by the IIHS, a “superior” rating. Standard equipment on the Laramie, Rebel, Longhorn, Limited Longhorn and Limited trims, and optional on the Tradesman and Bighorn trims with the Level 1 Equipment Group package, it’s an easy add-on for extra safety.
