2019 Ram 1500 Receives Good Safety Marks from IIHS
The 2019 Ram 1500 has a lot going for it, and when it comes to family cars, many wouldn’t think of a light duty pickup truck. We can’t blame them – pickup trucks aren’t known for their family-friendly features. They’re more about towing capacity and payloads, they’re known as work trucks. So when Fiat Chrysler Automobiles dominated the GAAMA Family Car Challenge with the Ram 1500, many consumers were shocked. Now putting those family qualities to the test, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) put the 2019 Ram 1500 through the ringer, like all vehicles on the streets and trucks at Ram dealerships today.
Testing for Safety
Every consumer wants to make sure their vehicle is safe – even those who love to race up and down the street want to know they have a car built with safety features to keep them okay. Pickup trucks aren’t any different, and the 2019 Ram 1500 was recently tested by the IIHS to prove it. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, or IIHS, is a trusted organization for rating vehicle safety, having done so since 1959.
To test a vehicle’s ability to defend against injury to passengers, vehicles are tested for crash avoidance and mitigation with five major tests. For crash avoidance, advanced safety features for front crash prevention are tested for, along with the headlights of the vehicle. For mitigation, the strength of the vehicle is tested through the following tests: small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side impact, roof strength, and the head restraints and seats. The IIHS rates vehicles on a scale from poor to good, where “good” is the highest rating a vehicle can receive.
2019 Ram 1500 IIHS Test Results
For the most part, the 2019 Ram 1500 did fairly well for the IIHS tests. When it comes to testing for crash mitigation, the 2019 Ram 1500 outperformed its 2018 counterpart. In 2018, the Ram 1500 received a “good” rating on the moderate overlap front test, side-impact test, and the head restraints and seats – small overlap front crash mitigation and roof strength were given “marginal” marks, and small overlap front crash mitigation was not tested for the passenger; no front crash prevention technology was equipped on the 2018 model.
The 2019 model year is much different – we would also like to note that the following marks are for the 2019 Ram 1500 with a Crew Cab. In terms of crash mitigation, the Ram 1500 received a “good” rating in every category. Furthermore, thanks to full-speed forward collision warning plus, frontal crash prevention is now a go, having received a “superior” rating. The headlights for 2019 and the LATCH child seat restraint system both received “marginal” marks in both model years. The IIHS does not give any suggestions for improving this, but since automatic headlamps are a lineup standard, we presume that opting in for the Premium LED Lighting Group, available for some trims, would be beneficial to drivers looking for more visibility on the road in a pickup truck.
Other advanced safety features for the 2019 Ram 1500 include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, advanced brake assist, LaneSense Lane Departure Warning-Plus, ParkSense Parallel/Perpendicular Park Assist, ParkSense park assist with reverse stop, Rear Cross Path detection, and 9-1-1 Call Assist. With all of these available, consumers can get a family-friendly vehicle that is also capable of hard work and has off-road capability.
