Configurations
Although there are three models for the Ram Chassis Cab, the 3500, 4500, and 5500, much of the options are the same. The specs do vary though and will be covered briefly, but we’ll focus on the Ram Chassis Cab 3500 Tradesman and 3500 SLT trims. Both trims can come with a 4×4 or 4×4 drivetrain. Regardless of which, their configuration options remain the same. The choices are a Regular Cab 10K with a 143.5-inch wheelbase or a Crew Cab 10k with a 172.4-inch wheelbase.
Engine Types
The engine standard for both trims is a commercial-grade 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine that can generate up to 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. The larger engine is an option, a 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel I6 engine, able to deliver 385 horsepower and 900 lb-ft of torque. Keep in mind, these specs are for the 3500 model.
Towing Capacity
When it comes to the 3500 models of the 2018 Ram Chassis Cab, each trim has a GVWR of 10,000 pounds. That acronym stands for “Gross Vehicle Weight Rating”, a term used to define the operating weight of a vehicle when including the vehicle’s chassis, body, engine, engine fluids, fuel, accessories, driver, passengers, and cargo. This does not include the weight of any trailer.
Good to know, given that 10,000 pounds is more than half of the 3500 trims max towing capacity, a total of 19,280 pounds when powered by the gas engine. Both 3500 trims can also handle a payload of 4900 pounds. If looking for a stronger model, such as the Chassis Cab 5500, the max diesel towing capacity goes up to 30,600 pounds. When truck buying for a business, definitely keep these numbers in check to make sure the right heavy duty truck is purchased.
