2017 Ram ProMaster
The Ram ProMaster has been around for some time now, and consumers keep finding new ways to use it. With all the upfit configurations one can install and the Augmented Reality Upfit Configurator, commercial businesses can easily learn about the possibilities a cargo van can offer their company. Plus, with best-in-class fuel economy, cargo, and payload ratings, prospective buyers can take comfort in the fact they’re getting a strong and reliable commercial van.

All of the 2017 Ram ProMaster cargo trims (except the base trim) are available with two engine options. One engine option is the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine with VVT. “VVT” stands for “Variable Valve Timing”, a technology used by many brands to improve fuel economy and power by adjusting the valve timing of an engine’s cylinders. With a best-in-class horsepower of 280 horsepower, and a maximum payload capacity of 4,430 pounds, this engine makes the ProMaster a reliable and powerful vehicle.
The second engine option is the 240-horsepower 3.0-liter I4 EcoDiesel engine. While the horsepower is a little lower than the 3.6L engine’s horsepower, the 3.0L EcoDiesel engine increases torque to 420 lb-ft of torque, making heavy duty jobs much easier. The Ram ProMaster also has the option of two transmissions, except for the base trim – a 6-speed automatic transmission or a 6-speed dual active drive transmission.
Payload and Towing Capacity
Across the lineup, a total of 5,100 pounds is the towing capacity no matter the trim. However, when it comes to the payload, if properly equipped, things change a bit. The Ram ProMaster 1500 Cargo High Roof has the lowest payload capacity of 3,770 pounds. The 1500 Cargo Low Roof with a 118-inch wheelbase can carry up to 3,990 pounds. A ProMaster 3500 High Roof with a 159-inch wheelbase has a towing capacity of more than 4,300 pounds no problem.
There are many options when it comes to configuring the look of a 2017 Ram ProMaster, more than one would think. Consumers can pick one of nine colors, it comes with a dark gray grille but can be swapped out for a chrome grille, and there are several options for the side windows and doors. The standard setup is a sliding passenger side door without glass and 260-degree opening rear hinged doors. However, every trim can get rear hinged doors with deep tinted glass or a sliding passenger side door with fixed glass. Aside from the base, all of the other trims can get a driver-side sliding door with or without glass windows.
There are a number of features found on the 2017 Ram ProMaster cargo van too. Deep tint sunscreen glass to keep glare out of the driver’s eyes is an option available to the entire lineup. So are heated mirrors for keeping visibility always high. Standard features consist of side wall cargo tie down rings, an underslung tire carrier, and the rear doors come without glass. All models ride on 16-inch wheels outfitted with all-season tires.
The interior is, of course, a little different. Aside from the upfit options one may have with the 2017 Ram ProMaster, Ram wants to keep people comfortable even in a two-seater. Both the driver and passenger seat are trimmed in cloth and can adjust in four ways for optimal comfort. The option to upgrade to a driver suspension or swivel seat is standard throughout the lineup, and heated seats for the driver and passenger are a nice add-on. There’s also the option for a passenger double seat and passenger swivel seat, or to cover both seats in vinyl for a classier feel.
For cargo convenience, there is the option to add an underseat storage tray, but there’s also a cargo net, a cargo partition area, and LED cargo area light bars. Of course, a regular cargo lamp comes standard. With most Ram vehicles, a trip computer is also a standard feature so drivers always know how far they can go before the next fill up. Pick a solid color or color combination of black/grey for the interior look.
Being a commercial vehicle, no one is expecting to throw a party in the Ram ProMaster – the ProMaster City, might have that option though. Going with the former, a standard 4-speaker sound system is installed to play some tunes, with a MP3 AM/FM/MP3 radio and input for USB and auxiliary. Options to add a 5-inch touchscreen, GPS navigation, Uconnect 3.0, and Uconnect 5.0 are available on all trims. To conveniently control the stereo, opt-in for steering wheel-mounted audio controls.
Safety Features and Warranty
With all that cargo, and the fact that vans are huge, safety is a must. The 2017 Ram ProMaster has an advanced front airbag system with side-curtain front airbags, traction and stability control systems, a ParkView rear back-up camera kit to install your own camera, and remote keyless entry for a little convenience. Optional safety features include a DOT certified roadside safety kit, an electronic vehicle tracking system, ParkSense rear park assist, a ParkView rear back-up camera, a security alarm, and speed control.
All Ram ProMaster cargo cans are covered by the following warranties: 3-year or 36,000-mile basic warranty, a 5-year or 60,000-mile powertrain warranty, 5 years or 100,000 miles of unlimited, and a 5-year/100,000-mile rust-through coverage plan.
