2017 Ram ProMaster City
Do you remember the CNN En Marcha? It was a Ram ProMaster cargo van that CNN en Espanol fully customized into a newsroom on wheels. Ram has many trucks, but only two vans to get the job done, and with the many upfits for customization, they only really need two. If the ProMaster is a little daunting though, perhaps the ProMaster City is more your style. It’s made for the city, is more stylish than a van, and can still be turned into almost anything on wheels.
Highway Fuel Economy
There are four available van configurations, and each ProMaster City model is powered by a 2.4-liter Tigershark MultiAir I-4 engine. This engine generates 178 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque. The MultiAir technology greatly helps with its fuel economy for a van this size.
“MultiAir” is a variation of variable valve timing technology, the process that controls the intake/exhaust of air/fuel via an engine’s cylinders, developed by Fiat Powertrain Technologies. Operated by hydraulics, it is more advanced than most VVT technologies, increasing the efficiency of feeding air into the engine’s cylinders. In the end, this results in a fuel economy of 21/28 mpg city/highway for the 2017 Ram ProMaster City.
Being that there is only one type of engine for both trims, the gear switching is left to a 9-speed automatic transmission. The van’s maximum payload is 1,883 pounds, and its maximum towing capacity is 2,000 pounds.
Aside from the available upfits and two trims, buyers also have the option of two body styles, the ProMaster City Wagon and the ProMaster City Cargo Van. The Ram ProMaster Wagon has a large cargo space and seating for five passengers, and the Ram ProMaster City Cargo Van has an even bigger cargo space and seating for two passengers.
Regardless of the configuration, the exterior of the 2017 Ram ProMaster City Cargo Van or Wagon are primarily the same. The major difference is the rear passenger and rear-end windows are standard versus metal panels. Both side doors slide open for easyily entering/exiting either ProMaster City, and the rear doors open a full 180-degrees for ease of access to load/unload equipment.
Daytime running headlamps are optional on each, with fog lamps a SLT-only option. On both, the cargo van or wagon owners can install a variety of roof racks, rails, and crossbars. Power heated exterior mirrors are standard on the SLT trims only. Remote Keyless entry is a standard feature on both models. Deep tint sunscreen glass is optional on the two Tradesman trims and is standard on the SLT trims. Both configurations are locked into a variation of 16-inch wheels, but have eight colors to choose from for a little personal style.
The changes between the cargo van and the wagon are more apparent in the interior. The Ram Power Wagon has a 60/40 fold and tumble rear seat, cloth low-back bucket seats, the option for GPS Antenna Input, a front overhead storage bin on both trims, an optional remote start system, and front and rear all-weather floor mats. The ProMaster City Cargo Van has an LED-lit cargo area, a lockable glove box, and is available with two partition packages or the option to leave the area behind the passengers and cargo open. It’s not a long list, but aside from basic standards for vehicles today, there isn’t a whole lot of flair between the two.
The entertainment features for the 2017 Ram ProMaster City cargo van and wagon are the exact same. A 4-speaker system is standard on both trims with a media input hub (USB and auxiliary). A 5.0-inch touchscreen, integrated voice command with Bluetooth, Uconnect 5.0, and steering wheel-mounted audio controls come standard on both SLT trims. Aside from the audio controls, these features are optional add-ons for the base trim of each, and Uconnect 5.0 NAV is an available option for all trims.
Safety Features and Warranty
Safety features are also greatly shared amongst the two. Both have 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, driver and passenger airbags, supplemental front and side-curtain airbags, trailer sway damping, stability control systems, and there are three rear seat head restraints on the ProMaster City. Optional are the ParkSense Rear Park Assist system, a ParkView Rear Back-up camera, a DOT roadside safety kit, and a vehicle tracking system.
All Ram vehicles are covered by the following warranties: 3-year or 36,000-mile basic warranty, a 5-year or 60,000-mile powertrain warranty for gas engines and a 5-year or 100,000-mile warranty on diesel engines. They also come with 5 years or 60,000 miles of unlimited roadside assistance and a 5-year/unlimited-mile rust-through coverage plan.
