Configurations + Options
The best part about Ram’s line of chassis cab trucks is the number of options buyers have to choose from. Cab size, wheelbase lengths, engines, the list is very long, which is great for businesses that have specific needs. The 4500/5500 models come standard with a dual rear wheel axle, but the 3500 chassis cab model is available with a single rear wheel (SRW) axle or dual rear wheel (DRW) axle.
For the 2017 model year, there are three Ram chassis cab models (3500/ 4500/ 5500) and 3 trims – Tradesman, SLT, and Laramie. Depending on the trim, the truck may be available with a regular or crew cab configuration. Ram’s available wheelbases range from 143.5 inches to 204 inches.
6.4L HEMI Engine
The 3500/4500/550 chassis cab trims are available with two engines. The standard engine for all Ram Chassis Cab models is a 6.4-liter V8 Heavy Duty HEMI engine. When on the 3500 chassis cab, it generates 370 horsepower and best-in-class 429 lb-ft of torque; when on the Ram 4500/5500, the engine generates 366 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. The Ram 3500 chassis cab is paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission, or the AISIN transmission, which boosts payload and towing capacity. The AISIN automatic transmission is the only transmission option for the Ram 4500/5400 chassis cabs.
6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel Engine
Buyers looking for a little more power may want to opt for the 6.7-liter Cummins diesel engine. The Cummins name is well-known in the truck community because Cummins engines are built to work hard and last long. The 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel engine can be paired to one of two transmissions, and when paired to the automatic AISIN transmission, the engine is called the 6.7L Cummins High Output Turbo diesel engine.
With the AISIN transmission, the chassis cab produces 325 horsepower, best-in-class 750 lb-ft of torque, and makes the chassis cab best-in-class maximum towing capacity. When paired to the 6-speed manual transmission, 3500/4500/5500 chassis cab models produced 320 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque.
For most trucks, like the Ram Chassis Cab, towing and payload capacities are directly related to several factors like torque, gear ratio, rear wheel axle configuration, and the weight of the truck. Due to all of those factors and available configurations, there are a range of maximum towing and payload capacities on the chassis cab lineup. Below is the range of the minimum and maximum capacities for each chassis cab model with each engine.

Depending on the trim and configurations selected, the exterior features on the 2017 Ram Chassis Cab vary greatly. For instance, a standard feature on the 3500 Tradesman and SLT trims is automatic headlamps, but automatic high beam headlamp control may not be available until higher-end trims or heavier models (4500 and 5500). The same can be said for Fog Lamps, which are optional on the 3500 Tradesman and SLT, but may be standard on other trims with different configurations.
Convenient features available are tubular side steps for easy access into the chassis cab; exterior mirrors with courtesy lamps, memory function, turn signals, and/or a heated function; and a rear window defroster. Other features stand out, like the ability to remove the cab back trim panel, or a front grille cover for those working in snow-heavy winter climates. Based on the model, 17- or 18-inch wheels will be available in various styles, and a full-size spare tire may be included as an option or standard feature.
The interior is just as configurable, and various features are available depending on the model, trim, and configurations. For instance, a 40/20/40 split bench seat is a standard feature, but a Ram Work Grade Vinyl 40/20/40 bench seat may be optional – same thing, just better than the standard option. Also available are heated front seats, heated second-row seats, ventilated front seats, and a rear 60/40 split-folding seat.
Luxury features like automatic dual-zone a/c control and a heated steering wheel are saved for the SLT trims. Convenient features like GPS navigation or a rear sliding window are available, and tinted glass windows and windshield glass are standard features so these truck drivers can see where they’re going with all that cargo they’re hauling. The option to delete several interior components, such as the cab back trim panel, front center set, and rear floor storage tray is available on many models and trims.
Entertainment and sound systems on the 2017 Ram Chassis Cab vary greatly, and options range from a 2- or 6-speaker system and an available 5- or 8.4-inch touchscreen. Depending on other features, such as navigation, Uconnect 8.4 NAV, and Uconnect Access may be available. Integrated Bluetooth with voice command is a lineup option, it does not come standard.
Safety Features and Warranty
Trucks this big and this powerful need all the safety features they can get. A standard feature is capping the speed at 102 mph, or as low as 70 mph. Available advanced features may include ParkSense front/rear park assist, a ParkView rear back-up camera, keyless entry, keyless enter ‘n go, and various emergency items such as a DOT Certified roadside safety kit or fire extinguisher.
