2017 Ram 2500 Specs
The Ram 2500, next up on the trucker food chain and middle sibling to the 1500 and 3500. For heavy-duty work, this is the first stop, trusted by many truck lovers or those who want to get the job done. Whether it’s being used for towing or carrying a heavy payload, the Ram 2500 can get a number of jobs done. It’s powerful, stylish, and convenient. Plus, like the Ram 1500, the Ram 2500 has various options that can change everything.
Max. Towing Capacity
Buyers of the Ram 2500 have the option of a few engine configurations, three cab configurations, and the choice of 2×4 or 4×4 drivetrain. Any of the options can change the capabilities of the truck. The base engine is a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 VVT* engine that generates 383-horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. As most truck drivers would know, torque tends to equate to towing capacity; so the less torque, the less the Ram 2500 can tow. More on that in a bit.
The other three engine configurations are as follows: the 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel engine (paired to an automatic or manual transmission), and the heavy-duty 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine. The diesel engine is a bit of a big deal given the Cummins name and popularity. When paired to the automatic transmission, the 6.7L engine generates a total of 370-horsepower and 800 lb-ft of torque — wow! The 6.4-liter HEMI generates a mere 410-horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque; very little difference compared to the 5.7-liter variation.
The three engines named here all have their own capacities for payload and towing. They are as follows – Engine: Horsepower / Torque / Max. Towing/ Max. Payload.
- 5.7-liter HEMI V8: 383 HP / 400 LB-FT / 13,900 lbs. / 3,060 lbs.
- 6.4-liter HEMI V8: 410 HP / 429 LB-FT /16,300 lbs. / 3,990 lbs.
- 6.7-liter Cummins (manual):350 HP / 660 LB-FT / 16,700 lbs. / 2,900 lbs.
- 6.7-liter Cummins (auto): 370 HP / 800 LB-FT / 18,000 lbs. / 3,160 lbs.
