Engine Types

There are four engines available throughout the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee lineup, but some are reserved for the 4×4 drivetrain, the default being 4×2. The standard engine is a 3.6-liter V6 engine built with VVT and ESS. Variable Valve Timing (VVT) is a process designed to optimize the air/fuel intake/exhaust of an engine’s cylinders for superior performance and fuel economy. Electronic Start-Stop (ESS) technology turns off the engine when idling to conserve fuel. Together, this engine generates 295-horsepower and has a fuel economy of 19/26 mpg city/highway.

A 3.0 EcoDiesel V6 engine is available for various trims, generating 240-horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque if looking to haul some cargo and reduce CO2 emissions. For more power there is the 360-hp 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine that is optional on select trims, and only when equipped with a 4×4 drivetrain. For total power, there is a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT that is equipped with an SRT-tuned 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine that generates 475 horsepower – no small feat for a SUV. The Grand Cherokee SRT is also only available with a 4×4 drivetrain to offer drivers superior handling of the road and the power.

4×4 Systems

There are several 4×4 systems available on the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee. These of course are only available with the 4×4 drivetrain. The SRT trim has its own exclusive 4×4 system.

Quadra-Trac I is a full-time 4×4 system that handles all-weather and unsavory driving conditions. Quadra-Trac II on the other hand is a part-time 4×4 system and comes with a two-speed transfer case for redirecting torque to the axle with the most traction in the event of tire-slippage. It also comes with Jeep’s Selec-Terrain Traction Control System, in which drivers can select one of four driving modes: Snow, Sand, Mud, or Rock.

Quadra-Drive II 4×4 comes with a rear Electronic Limited Slip Differential (ELSD) for all-weather traction and off-road capability. It also has the Quadra-Lift Air Suspension System for increased ground clearance. The Selec-Terrain Traction Control System can also be found on this system, with the following modes: Snow, Sand/Mud, or Rock.

Quadra-Trac SRT 4×4 is exclusive to the Grand Cherokee SRT. It is a full-time 4×4 system and comes with a transfer case for superior performance in any conditions. It also has an ELSD and a wet clutch for managing traction. For torque splitting and suspension dampening, a Selec-Trac five-mode system can be found in the cabin.
