2022 Ram 2500
Ram Trucks continue to prove that this automaker knows what truck buyers want. Power, lifestyle, adventure – Ram is hitting all the notes lately, and going green is next. For those that need to do some heavy lifting, Ram has something for that too, starting with the more heavy-duty of the lineup, the Ram 2500, returning for 2022.
6.7-liter Cummins turbo Diesel
Avail. Engine Type
Not many changes have been made to the powertrain for the Ram 2500; the 2022 lineup consists of six trims – Tradesman, Big Horn, Laramie, Power Wagon, Limited Longhorn, and Limited. The standard engine under the hood of every trim is a 6.4-liter V8 Heavy Duty HEMI engine, optimized with a multi-displacement system (MDS), and able to generate a best-in-class horsepower of 410 and 429 lb-ft of torque. An available option on every trim aside from the Power Wagon is a 6.7-liter Cummins turbo Diesel engine, able to generate 370 horsepower and 850 lb-ft of torque.
Driving and Handling
Each trim comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission to transfer all that power to the wheels. For those looking to do some heavy lifting, when properly equipped, the maximum towing capacity for the 2021 Ram 2500 HD pickup truck is 17,540 pounds with the HEMI V8 engine, and 19,680 pounds with the Cummins Turbo Diesel engine. If not looking to get many upgrades, the Tradesman trim with the HEMI V8 is 15,040 pounds. On that note, every trim can come with either a 4×2 drivetrain or 4×4 drivetrain – except for the Power Wagon, locked into a 4×4 configuration.
The 2022 Ram 2500 has a variety of features standard and available throughout the lineup. Past the Tradesman, consumers will find exterior heated mirrors with turn signals, exterior mirrors with memory, LED bed lighting, and LED interior lighting as available features or standard on others. Across the lineup, trims are equipped with automatic headlamps and LED taillamps, illuminated entry, tinted glass windows, and tinted windshield.
Past the Big Horn, trims come with acoustic glass and a rear power sliding window. In the Tradesman and Big Horn, this window also opens, but manually. Many trims offer add-on features, such as a locking tailgate, a tri-fold tonneau cover, tow hooks, side steps, and the RamBox Cargo Management System. The 2022 Ram 2500 rides on either 17-, 18-, or 20-inch wheels.
Inside the 2022 Ram 2500, there seem to be more features shared, such as a 40/20/40 split-folding bench, or a 60/40 rear folding seat for cargo and seating configurations. The Tradesman and Big Horn trims come with cloth seat trimming, but the rest of the lineup comes with leather upholstery. Heated front seats are available on all trims past the Tradesman, and on second seats past the Big Horn. Ventilated front seats are also available past the Big Horn. Automatic dual-zone temperature control is available on some trims and standard on others.
This year, some additions have been made. The 2022 Ram Heavy Duty Big Horn/Lone Star Silver Edition features chrome tow hooks, belt molding, door handle inserts, mirrors, a unique grille, and black interior accents. If going with a single-rear wheel, it comes with chrome wheel-to-wheel side steps and 20-inch polished aluminum wheels. Dual-rear wheel setups come with chrome cab-length steps and 17-inch polished aluminum wheels. This is only available in Crew and Mega Cab configurations.
For 2022, the Ram Power Wagon offers a Level 3 Equipment Package that includes a black grille mesh with a Gunmetal R-A-M grille badge and premium headlamps with Gloss Black surrounds enhancing the exterior. Inside, premium Medium Greystone Natura Plus or optional Bristol leather bucket seats with embossed Power Wagon logo, and more. The Power Wagon also offers an electronic transfer case on Level 2, standard on Level 3 equipment packages with optional Bristol leather seats.
For 2022, the Ram 2500 Tradesman may still come with Uconnect 3 on a 5-inch touchscreen display, but starting with the Big Horn, it’s all Uconnect 5. Standard on an 8.4-inch touchscreen – with navigation on the Limited Longhorn trim (available on all trims), and on a 12-inch touchscreen on the Limited trim (available on all trims). Past the Tradesman, although available as an upgrade, consumers can expect voice command with Bluetooth is a lineup standard, along with Google Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot, and Amazon Alexa built-in. HD Radio and steering wheel mounted audio controls are available on most trims.
Sound systems vary greatly on the trim and consumer choice.
